Congratulations on the publication of your new book! What does it feel like to have Lyrics & Curses in the world?
I’m super excited for it to finally be born! This has been a long road with this one, and I’m so glad I can finally share it with everyone. An 80s party would be nice right about now!
How would you describe Lyrics & Curses to someone who is interested in reading it?
Stranger Things meets Pretty in Pink. Or I would just say there’s some 80s, some romance, some character-driven stuff, and sprinkle in a little weird and paranormal! I’m honestly bad at explaining stuff! But if you like nostalgia and want an escape, then check it out!
What was your inspiration for the concept of Lyrics & Curses?
So when I was a kid, I was a little creeped out by mirrors. I can’t really say what I feared because it would be a spoiler, but even now, I still believe it could always be possible to travel through them!
What do you hope readers take away from this new release?
I wrote this not only for my teenage self, who would have demanded it, but for my daughter who likes older things. I think it’s a cool concept for the newer generation, who may not know all the songs or 80s things that Lark and Auden do, to be able to Google or YouTube the music, etc, and explore more of that era, which is a lot different than today.
What makes this book special/unique, and why should readers be sure to place it on their TBR list?
For me, it’s because two people love music so much that at times, they don’t necessarily have to talk. It can be done through lyric exchanges or just listening to music, their life, together. Plus there is some weird stuff!
What kind of impact did writing Lyrics & Curses have on you personally?
It put me in a spot to where I wanted more and more to find a DeLorean time machine and go visit this time! It just made me feel really good writing it, when most of my first drafts are a struggle!
How are you reflected in Lyrics & Curses (or, how much of you is reflected in the book)?
Lark is someone I wish I was. If I was a teen in the 80s I could see myself being exactly like her.
What is your favorite thing to do to promote your book?
Self-promo is so hard for me! But I like to show other stuff besides the cover if I can. Like candles or character art. I really would like tons of character art from readers. That’s my favorite thing with bigger authors because they get to receive such cool things and see how their readers envision the characters.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned while being a writer?
Marketing for sure. The writing part is the easiest compared to everything else!

Candace Robinson spends her days consumed by words and hoping to one day find her own DeLorean time machine. Her life consists of avoiding migraines, admiring Bonsai trees, watching classic movies, and living with her husband and daughter in Texas—where it can be forty degrees one day and eighty the next.
